- A 6-Step Guide

What to Do After an Accident - A 6-Step Guide

1. Stop the Car

Crash repair
  • Under UK Law, you must stop after an accident where there is any damage to person or property.
  • Pull over to the side of the road if you can, turn off the engine and switch on the hazard warning lights.

2. Check for Injuries

Crash repair
  • Check for any injuries to yourself and any passengers in the vehicle and call the police or an ambulance if anyone is hurt.
  • If it is a minor collision and no one is injured, it’s worth making a note of this to avoid any injury claims further down the line.
  • Remember to stay calm – it is completely normal to be shaken up.

No accident, but your vehicle has broken down?

  • If you have registered on the MyAudi app, just press the spanner button in the roof of your vehicle.
  • Or call UK Roadside Assistance on 0800 526 626.

We are there to give you the best possible advice and practical help - 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

3. Swap Details

Exchange details with anyone involved in the accident (including witnesses). Write down their:
  • - Name
  • - Address
  • - Telephone number
  • - Vehicle Registration Number

Additional information to get if you can:
  • - Find out their insurance details and the name of the registered keeper.
  • - If they are driving a work vehicle, get their employer's details too.
  • - If there are any police officers present, get their name, rank and the number on their collar.

  • Record the exact time and date of the accident.
  • Write down the sequence of events as you remember them.
  • If you have a mobile phone or camera, take as many photos as possible of the damage, the road and any obstructions that may have contributed to the collision.
  • If you do not have a camera, write down (or sketch) every detail you can about the accident and the surrounding area.

Crash repair
  • Once you have returned home and have had some time to collect your thoughts, pass on all the information you have gathered to your insurer.
  • Make sure to tell your insurer as soon as you can. Failure to do so may invalidate your cover – check your policy as insurers’ time limits vary.
  • Always report an accident, even if you don’t want to make a claim.
